BSc (Hons) Green Energy Engineering

Energy is the basis of our modern industrial society, powering our homes, workplaces, and transport and communications systems. However, today, we face a challenge of meeting pressure of the growing energy demands whilst at the same time ensuring the reduction of carbon emissions. Concern mounts about limited resources, human induced climate change and air pollution due to the burning of fossil fuels. New sustainable sources of energy are being sought to replace those which we currently use. Renewable energy technologies include biofuels, biogas, fuel cells, solar heating and cooling, hydroelectric power, solar power and wind power. The Government of Ghana, like the rest of the world, is challenged to develop innovative concepts for a safe, economically efficient, sustainable and environmental-friendly energy supply. A carefully planned use of Clean or Green energy technologies can mitigate or eliminate a wide range of environmental and human health impacts of energy use and support long term sustainable energy availability. Many foreign investors n the area of renewable energy are now coming into Ghana and the rest of West Africa to develop clean energy technologies and promote this alternative source of energy. Yet the West African sub-region lacks the manpower to support this venture. This is what makes the training of engineers in Green energy technologies inevitable.

Besides, the sustainable availability of energy has become a significant factor in the performance of the economy of societies; management of energy resources has become very vital. Energy management is the practice of using energy more efficiently by eliminating energy wastage or to balance justifiable energy demand with appropriate energy supply. It involves utilizing the available energy resources more effectively, that is with minimum incremental costs. The programme is therefore designed for individuals interested in supervisory and management positions in energy management.

This programme has been developed in response to the Ghana's ever-increasing demand for energy and the growing need for highly trained energy workers who seek advancement in their careers n the area of clean energy.

Philosophy & Objective

Energy Studies at Yeshua Tech is an exciting multi-disciplinary programme which provides a broad understanding of sustainable energy supply and use needed to work in today's rapidly changing energy industry. It addresses the environmental and economic aspects as well as the scientific and technical aspects. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to develop and implement new methods of renewable energy production and to improve the efficiency of existing systems and appliances.

The BSc (Hons) in Green Energy Engineering addresses theoretical and practical aspects of energy production and use in a global economy, effects of climate change due to fossil fuels, and engineering and technology requirements to develop 'green energy'. This Green technology pathway will involve industrial 'hands on' case studies where the student will interact with consultants and environmental professionals followed by a dissertation in this specialist area of renewable energy and energy management. The student will acquire the practical skills, field experience and knowledge necessary for a career in the Energy sector.
